How thick does Juliet balcony glass need to be?
In short, the minimum thickness required for the glass in a Juliet balcony depends on its style and size.

Framed glass Juliet balconies
If you’ve opted for a stylish framed glass balcony, like our Franklyn or Mirage examples, then the glass must be at least 10mm thick and made from toughened safety glass.
Anything less is not strong, or safe, enough and won’t comply with the relevant UK Building Regulations.
Be wary as well; thicker glass panes aren’t always necessary – unless your Juliet balcony is frameless (see below) – and will likely increase the cost without providing additional benefits.
Frameless glass Juliet balconies
Frameless Juliet balconies, like The Hilton in our selection, have different minimum requirements because they don’t have a supporting frame to strengthen them.
The exact glass thickness required for this type of balcony depends on its size:
- Smaller frameless balconies require 17.5mm laminated glass
- Larger balconies require glass panels that are at least 21.5mm thick

What’s the difference between toughened safety glass and laminated glass?

Toughened safety glass is usually robust enough for most framed glass balconies, while frameless balconies require stronger laminated glass.
Toughened safety glass is heated to extreme temperatures to make it up to five times stronger than regular glass. If it breaks, it shatters into small blunt pieces rather than sharp shards.
Laminated glass consists of two or more panes of glass which have been bonded with a tough plastic layer between them.
It has excellent impact resistance and, if shattered, the interlayer holds the fragments of glass together to maintain a barrier.
