What are the metal screws/pins/rods inside the Franklyn clamps for? Do I need to drill a hole in the glass?

Building Regulations
Are the products tested?
All products have been tested in-house to BSEN 2011 standards.
Are the products building control compliant?
In line with Part K of the UK Building Regulations, gaps in between railings are no more than 100mm to prevent children from becoming trapped. All of our balconies are designed to be 1100mm from the floor as standard – there may be exceptions to this for example if you have an internal step. See our helpful compliance guidance page for more information on building regulations and quality standards
Do I need planning permission for a juliet balcony?
Juliet balconies are generally exempt from planning permission requirements because they are typically flush with the building and do not extend beyond the exterior wall, however you should enquire with your local council if you are unsure. Some local authorities have special rules for buildings within designated conservation areas. If you choose a balcony with a small platform, planning permission may be required as this greater depth can result in an obstruction to the line of sight and affect the neighbours’ privacy.
What is toughened glass?
Toughened Safety Glass is up to five times stronger than standard, non-toughened glass. Its enhanced strength makes it ideal for Juliet balcony designs, allowing more light into your space without compromising on safety. All of our toughened safety glass meets European Safety Standards, and we can provide a certificate of conformity upon request.
This glass is created through a specialized process, where edge-worked panels are subjected to intense heating and rapid cooling, resulting in its superior durability. In the unlikely event of breakage, it shatters into small square fragments to minimize the risk of injury. Toughened safety glass is commonly used in buildings for unframed assemblies (such as balustrades), structurally loaded applications, and other areas where safety is paramount in the event of human impact.
Balcony Care & Maintenance
How to look after your balcony
• Occasionally you may find that fittings could need a quick ‘second tighten’ soon after installation as they settle. Though rare, if you find that fixings are repeatedly becoming loose, please seek the advice of a qualified tradesperson.
• A galvanized finish is the lowest maintenance finish option. However, the bright and shiny appearance will soon dull to a grey or white matte appearance which is unavoidable.
• Powder coating is a method of applying paint using a paint powder which is baked on in an over. Over time, chips and damage will appear as it perishes, this can easily be repaired with a colour-matched spray or brushed paint. You should clean every 6-12 months with a soft cloth and mild detergent to keep your paintwork looking fresh- dish soap will do the trick!
• Glass balconies can be cleaned and cared for in the same way as your building’s windows.
• Your stainless steel rails should be cleaned every few months with a wet soft cloth and mild detergent to avoid ‘tea staining’.
• Do not weld, cut, drill, or grind steel near stainless or galvanized steel. Resulting particles will contaminate stainless steel and lead to rust.
Why do I need to care for my stainless steel?
We use 316 marine grade stainless steel as standard and while it is corrosion resistant, it is not immune to corrosion when not properly cared for. To ensure longevity and keep it looking it’s best, clean only when the metal is dirty, or has lost its original appearance. If you live by the coast, your stainless steel may need more regular cleaning (every few months or so). A mild detergent, such as dish soap, and water is sufficient! Never use abrasive chemicals, cloths or pads including steel wool as this will react with the metal and degrade your balcony.

We cut grooves along the bottom of the sub frame, and this allows the water to drain away.
