A guide to installing Juliet balconies

A guide to installing Juliet balconies

More light, a greater sense of space, and improved views – the list of benefits from a Juliet balcony is impressive.

But how easy is it to put one in place?

Fitting a Juliet balcony is usually a straightforward home improvement, but the exact installation process can vary depending on the wall type and where the balcony will be being located.

How to install a Juliet balcony: A step-by-step guide

At C&R Direct, we do not offer a Juliet balcony installation service.

Instead, most of our customers choose to hire a qualified builder or utilise their builders already on site, to ensure that theirs is installed safely and securely.

The steps include:

Check wall structure: Check that the wall where you plan to install the balcony is structurally safe. When attaching to masonry or brick, it’s best for as many of the fixings as possible to be central on a brick.

Mark fixing points: Hold the balcony, or a template of the balcony in place, and mark where the fixings will go. Remember, the balcony must be at least 1,100mm above inside floor level.

Drill and fix: Drill into the wall and install the approved fixings. Use raw plugs or resin as appropriate to the wall type.

Secure the balcony: Next, align the balcony and tighten the fixings securely. Most of our balconies are supplied with bolt covers and touch-up paint to help achieve a high-quality finish.

What you need to know about fixing your Juliet balcony to the wall

To plan how to attach your new Juliet balcony to the wall safely, you should first assess what type of wall it is being fixed to.

A structural engineer, or qualified builder, can clarify what the most suitable fitting is.

The following is a general guide:

  • Brick or masonry: Coach screws and rawl plugs (sometimes resin)
  • Concrete: Same as brick
  • Timber: Coach screws with at least 75mm penetration
  • Stonework: May require packing or custom fixing plates for uneven surfaces

If you require bespoke fixing plates, we can supply them for you. Simply ask one of our team members for assistance.

Do you need planning permission to install a Juliet balcony?

The majority of Juliet balconies are classed as permitted developments and do not require planning permission.

However, you may need to obtain planning permission from your local planning authority (LPA) if:

  • Your property is listed
  • You live in in a conservation area
  • You’re making significant external changes
  • Your balcony has a platform

Even if planning permission isn’t required, you must still ensure that your new balcony complies with all relevant UK building regulations.

When you buy from C&R Direct, you can have complete confidence that our balconies are manufactured to meet or exceed these standards.

Designing your new Juliet balcony

Juliet balconies come in various shapes, sizes, and materials, allowing you to devise a solution that suits both your property type and your design preferences.

At C&R Direct, we manufacture and supply glass and metal Juliet balconies in a range of designs.

Steel Juliet balconies are a great choice for period properties and those seeking a more traditional look.

Meanwhile, for contemporary properties, glass Juliet balconies create a clean and modern aesthetic.
